14. What is the general relationship among access time, memory cost, and capacity?
If the memory can be organized by decreasing price per bit by increasing access time, and when data and
instructions can be distributed through this memory with a reduced frequency of memory access by the
CPU, then this pattern will reduce the overall cost ririskiky with certain performance levels.

33. What are the advantages of using a glass substrate for a magnetic disk?

34. How are data written onto a magnetic disk?
According to William Stallings's Computer Architecture and Organization, the step are:- 1. The write
mechanism make use of the electricity flowing through a coil in the write
head that produces a magnetic fields.
  2. Electrical pulses are sent to the write head, with different patterns of positive and
      negative currents.
 3. The currents in the coil of the write head induces a magnetic fields across the gap
between the head and the magnetic disk platter, which in turn magnetizes a small area on the recording
    medium.

35. How are data read from a magnetic disk?
well its simple it works like a tape it has tiny little gaps and some gaps hold electrons and it is written in
binary (1s&0s) binary is just a storage code if a gap has a electron it is binary 1 and if it has none its 0 and
how it collects the data is it sends a magnetic field threw it and when it hits a electron sensors detect a
    code, binary

36. Explain the diffrence between a simple CAV system and a multiple zoned recording system?

37. Define the terms track, cylinder and sector
Track: One of the many concentric circular strips around the medium on a disk.

Cylinder: A set of one or more tracks on a rotating magnetic or optical storage device that  can be read
   without moving the head.

Sector: The smallest unit of data that a magnetic storage device can read or write to or

   from the medium.
38. What is the typical disk sector size?
      512 bytes

39. Efine the terms seek time, rotational delay, access time and transfer time?

40. What common characteristics are shared by all RAID levels?

41. Briefly define the seven RAID levels?
There are number of different RAID levels:
          · Level 0 -- Striped Disk Array without Fault Tolerance: Provides data striping
(spreading out blocks of each file across multiple disk drives) but no redundancy. This
improves performance but does not deliver fault tolerance. If one drive fails then all
data in the array is lost.
          · Level 1 -- Mirroring and Duplexing: Provides disk mirroring. Level 1 provides twice
the read transaction rate of single disks and the same write transaction rate as single
            disks.
          · Level 2 -- Error-Correcting Coding: Not a typical implementation and rarely used,
Level 2 stripes data at the bit level rather than the block level.
         · Level 3 -- Bit-Interleaved Parity: Provides byte-level striping with a dedicated parity
disk. Level 3, which cannot service simultaneous multiple requests, also is rarely used. · Level 4 --
Dedicated Parity Drive: A commonly used implementation of RAID,
Level 4 provides block-level striping (like Level 0) with a parity disk. If a data disk
fails, the parity data is used to create a replacement disk. A disadvantage to Level 4 is
that the parity disk can create write bottlenecks.
        · Level 5 -- Block Interleaved Distributed Parity: Provides data striping at the byte
level and also stripe error correction information. This results in excellent performance
and good fault tolerance. Level 5 is one of the most popular implementations of RAID. · Level 6 --
Independent Data Disks with Double Parity: Provides block-level striping
with parity data distributed across all disks.
         · Level 0+1 -- A Mirror of Stripes: Not one of the original RAID levels, two RAID 0
stripes are created, and a RAID 1 mirror is created over them. Used for both replicating
          and sharing data among disks.
        · Level 10 -- A Stripe of Mirrors: Not one of the original RAID levels, multiple RAID

1 mirrors are created, and a RAID 0 stripe is created over these.
       · Level 7: A trademark of Storage Computer Corporation that adds caching to Levels 3
         or 4.
       · RAID S: (also called Parity RAID) EMC Corporation's proprietary striped parity
RAID system used in its Symmetrix storage systems.

 42. Explain the term striped data?
Dasar dari teknik RAID adalah “striping”, sebuah metoda untuk menyatukan beberapa harddisk untuk
menjadi sebuah harddisk virtual.

43. How is redundancy achieved in a RAID system?

44. In the context of RAID, what is the distinction between parallel access and independent access?

45. What is the difference btween CAV and CLV?
These are two different methods that a CD/DVD ROM drives work basically.
      CLV = Constant Linear Velocity
      CAV = Constant Angular Velocity
      Pros:
CLV: The laser sees the disc moving at the same speed throughout the whole burning session therefore the
interection between laser and disk is consistent.
CAV: Spindle speed is kept constant while the write speed constantly changes.
    Cons:
CLV: varying RPM will cause the disc to vibrate quite a bit, this can cause write quality errors. Limited to
    speeds of 16x on drives.

CAV: The interection between disk and laser can't be predicted exactly as the velocity of the disk and laser
    power must be changed continuously.

46. What differences between a CD and DVD account for the larger capacity of the atter?
CD's can hold around 700 megabytes of data.
Single-layer DVD's can hold around 4,700 megabytes (4.7Gb) of data.
Dual-layer DVD's can hold around twice this, and are usually used for pre-recorded movie DVD's.
The higher capacity of DVD's is due to their more compact, efficient design, which requires a more precise
mechanism to read them - hence CD players cannot read DVD's, but DVD's can read CD's.

Due to the relative "low fidelity" of CD's, they are cheaper, hence they are still used for storing data where
it is below the 700mb-ish capacity. Dual-layer DVD's are expensive, and HD-DVD/ Blu-Ray DVD even
more so (they're exactly the same principle - a more efficient use of space across the surface of the disc).
